As both teams were going through there warm up. there was one thing very visible between the sides and that was the number of players Hawick had warming up compared to Leith, such a change in contrast to our early encounter which we won 16 nil, we had to name our coach Colin Tomassi on the bench alongside Eugene and Waldo who arrived late on his rick saw! Hawick where really up for it and you could see that In there warm up, also they had their full strength team and a proper goal keeper so this was going to be different score than the last time, well the score line was although we scored on the run of play excellent ball in by Chris Beaton and finished well by trialist Mark McGregor, our second was another excellent strike by Greg Irvine, Coldstream bound Crouchy looked out of sorts during the match although that might have something to do with the emotional send off the Manager gave the players before the game! Anyway Hawick huff and puffed as they always do but again sadly lacking in any quality or direction but never less they didn’t give up, shortly before the end Steven Radzynski scored, an excellent through ball from Andy Milligan, Rad finished passed advancing Gavin Watson. Leith where cheered on by their biggest travelling support in ages, certainly the cheap lager and super Gary McKay’s sold in the kitchen went down a treat. Game finished 3.0 and Leith ended the season in 5th Place and the Alex Jack Cup in the bag.

The players presented Eugene with a signed home jersey as a thank you for all the Managers efforts, excellent touch by the players. Tam Currie thanked Eugene for all his efforts and of course delivering the team’s first senior trophy.

Typical end of season affair down at Woodside Park as Kelso went 1 up through top marksman Derek Burnett, Leith replied shortly after that a fine Rory Stewart strike, just before the break Kelso where reduced to 10 men after Leith Captain Neil Ewart was fouled in the penalty box Referee Scott had no option, up stepped Bobby Young to score his first of the season to make it 2.1 at Half time. Kelso started the second half with more desired that there Leith counter parts and it was no surprise Kelso equalised again Derek Burnett had loads of time to slot past Leith keeper Gordon, Leith tried to get in front again with Mark Duthie failing to finish, through on the goal keeper, Craig Downie hit smacked the bar from 20 yards, and a Neil Ewart header from a corner was cleared off the line, just as Kelso looked like settling for share of the spoils up step forward Derek Burnett to rise above everybody to power a header into the net from a corner for his hat trick and Kelso winner.

VALE OF LEITHEN enhanced their promotion prospects – and their championship ambitions – when a 2-0 victory against Leith Athletic moved them into second place in the Central Taxis First Division. Vale now only need to win one of their five remaining fixtures to guarantee promotion although, if Craigroyston fail to beat Stirling University on Saturday, the Innerleithen team will be promoted anyway. Vale were the brighter and more organised side in the early stages last night, perhaps due to the fact that the Leith Athletic party was late in arriving at Victoria Park because of traffic problems. And it took them only nine minutes to take the lead when a Gavin Tainsh cross from the right found Aaron Somerville and his overhead kick from 12 yards sent the ball looping over exposed Leith goalkeeper Ian Gordon.

Vale increased their advantage ten minutes later when Kerr Dodds fired over a low cross to the unmarked Darren Gillon, who hit a powerful volley low into the net from eight yards. The second half started with a frenzy of yellow cards before Steven Radzynski hit a shot wide for Leith from a good position. It was to be his last piece of meaningful action as he was later sent off for his second bookable offence. Vale were well served by their central-defensive partnership of Michael Stewart and John Hall while Gillon, Dodds and Paul Greenhill were tireless workers in midfield.

Rab Paget, the Vale manager, said: “In the first half we blew Leith out of the water and totally dominated the opening 45 minutes. Our goalkeeper had one save to make as we controlled midfield and were stronger all around the park. “In the second half, Leith, as expected, had a go without really testing us. It is a fantastic three points against the form team in the division. We now need one more win from five games and, if we don’t get it, then we don’t deserve to go up.”

Colin Tomassi, the Leith joint manager, said: “We obviously started slowly without a proper warm-up which did not help us because Vale started well and pressed the game. In the second half we didn’t take our chances.”

Gretna started with the wind at their backs and started to pose a threat to Iain Gordon’s goal and it was a fine save from Gordon after Dan Carmichael effort, further efforts on the Leith goal by Steven black and David Seggie brought out the best in Iain Gordon, however Gretna finally made the break through good move with Andy Hardman pass sent Steven Black through to side foot his strike pass Gordon on the 34th min, Leith responded with a good Darren Lockhart effort before a good strike from Steven Radzynski was well held by Josh Richardson in the Gretna Goal, just before half time an excellent Euan Campbell corner was wiped in right to the back post Josh Richardson miss judged the flight of the ball and it flew into the net with the game level at half time. Second half and it was Leith’s turn with the wind at their backs and they made a positive start with Mark Duthie getting the by-line and delivered quality cross with Radzynski going close with a header just over the bar, however the winning goal was for Leith to saviour and Gretna to admire, Pass in field from Sub Greg Irvine found Steven Radzynski with his back to goal just outside the centre circle took one touch to go past his 2 markers and he hit this unstoppable shot from fully 35 yards into the top corner on the 81st min.

Leith took the lead in this one sided affair through Euan Campbell after 5 mins, Campbell score 2 further goal to complete a 15 min hat trick, and also got a fourth in 20mins, Steven Radzynski scored twice in the first half with Darren Lockhart completing the scoring at Half time 7-0. Second half and Euan Campbell was replaced by Greg Irvine who also scored a hat trick inside10mins of the second half as Steven Radzynski added his third and fourth from a tight angles. Hawick to be fair to them with only 11 men including their 45 year old Manager playing at the back Dave Halfpenny they never gave up and despite being reduced to 10 men for violet conduct they should have scored after having 2 bites as the ball pin balled around Leith’s 6 yard box, up the other end Grant Fairbairn got his hat trick after replacing Mark Duthie and Darren Lockhart completed the scoring 0.16.

Both team had to deal with blustery conditions throughout this match but it was Leith who settled the quickly playing some neat football with no end product, Euan Campbell through twice but failed to get good connection with the ball as it was early dealt with by Brian Young. But it was houses that took a surprise lead, John Hunter evading the Leith defence to slot past the onrushing Iain Gordon in the home goal on the 43rd Minute. Second half and it was Easthouses that settled better, Iain Gordon pulling off an excellent save at the feet of Ryan Curran, John Hunter also went close as this game became end to end, Leith made a double substitution and it was that man Steven Radzynski who glanced his header over Brain Young after Jamie Lauder free-kick on the 89th Minute, but the game wasn’t finished straight after kick off Easthouses got the ball back and a through pass that looked at least 3 yards offside but Ryan Curran didn’t stop as the Leith defence did and slotted past Iain Gordon from a tight angle 92nd Minute.

Leith should have taken the lead after Euan Campbell was through on Gilbertson who made an excellent save in the Tynecastle goal, Radzynski, Duthie and Beaton all went close as the first half became the John Gilbertson show his excellent saves ensured Tynecastle remained in the tie at half time, second half and it was Tynecastle that got the unlikely break through free kick by Paul Devlin was glanced pass Gordon in the Leith goal big Brian Foster, this rallied Tynecastle and they should have score again good work from Gary Cherrie with Gary McCormack hitting the post, at the other the end the same old story with Leith failing to take their chances Mark Duthie and Euan Campbell both should have scored, in a 10 minute spell a Beaton corner was wiped in everybody missed it apart from Euan Campbell who’s slight touch couldn’t convert it at the back post. Tynecastle went up the other end and Wayne Sproule was upended in the box by Neil Ewart, grade 1 Referee David Somers pointed to the spot, Paul Devlin smashed the ball home, shortly after that Leith went 3 up front however this let Sproule have acres of space down the right side and it was his cross that fell to Gary McCormack who slotted home from close range, by this point Tynecastle where dominated and should have got a few more.

Leith made one change from the Hawick match last week Martyn Wallace dropping out in place of Skipper Neil Ewart. Manager Eugene Taylor was back at the helm but it was another motivational half time team talk that leads to the team’s comeback and takes an unlikely 3 points! Gala started the better at a blustery Muirhouse Sports Ground and deservedly took the lead when a mistake at the back allowed Jamie Gibson the simple of taps in to make it 1.nill, Gala failed to take there chances in the first half as this team wanted to avenge the 5.1 defeat nearly 2 weeks ago and really looked in the mood however Gordon in goal was having a good game. Leith looked out of sorts but did get a life line when Darren Lockhart pass found Euan Campbell and he fired passed Lumsden in the Gala goal. Second half and Leith came out with some purpose and started to play, Chris Beaton rattled the post but couldn’t find the break through as this game became end to end. Gala where about to hold on for a deserved point when a corner swung in by Chris Beaton found Steve Radzynski who rose above all to bullet the header pass Lumsden for an unlikely victory to Leith.

Man of the Match for Leith: Martyn Wallace (Waldo) brilliant for the 15mins he was on the field.

Leith totally dominated this match even though they didn’t play well at all, Mark Duthie opened the scoring after 20mins, Craig Downie made 2 after 30mins, 5mins later Duthie got his second then missed a penalty after Steven Radzynski was felled in the box, Hawick where reduced to 10 men. Chris Beaton made it 4 after half time. Game got scrappy as Hawick battled away and there were more offside’s than I can care to mention as Leith went hunting for more goals and Euan Campbell duly obliged after 57mins, Craig Downie got his second after 67mins followed by Jamie Lauder 78mins and Euan Campbell getting his second on the 80th Min, 3mins late Martyn Wallace got on the end of a corner to make it 9, finally Darren Lockhart completed the scoring in85min strike from close range. Not the best game with the result never in any danger just how many as Leith take their unbeaten run to 15 Matches.

Leith made 2 changes from the Strollers match, Euan Campbell and Ross Middlemiss came in for Greg Irvine (Suspended) and Craig Downie (Failed Fitness Test)

Both team started slowly on a pitch that held up well considering as the night wore on the colder it got the harder the pitch became however both teams had a go in an entertaining match.

Leith took the lead with an excellent through ball from Campbell that Steve Radzynski slotted past Lumsden, 10 mins later Radzynski scored his second, quick free-kick from Campbell to the unmarked Duthie who fired an inch perfect cross for Radzynski to make it 2.0. Gala where no means out of the match and got back into it from Jamie Gibson who cut in from the left to fire the ball pass Gordon in the Leith goal, Gala hit the bar on 2 occasions throughout the night as Campbell also rattled one of the bar for Leith before Radzynski scored his 3rd from the Penalty spot after Duthie was upended, an excellent pass from Downie through Steve and he took advantage of a defence mistake to make it 4.1. Mark Duthie who had an excellent match got himself on the score sheet after Lumsden failed to deal with a through ball.

Deserved victory for Leith who took there chances, the score line did flatter Leith a little with Gala feeling aggrieved with the Penalty decision that went against them although I have seen them given.

Man of the match: Mark Duthie, and a wee shout for 4 goals Radzynski.
